Why is St Ives so special?

The wonderful little fishing village of St Ives has long attracted visitors, artists and bon viveurs.

St Ives has a picture perfect seaside setting with rocky headlands, golden sandy beaches and shimmering azure seas.  Whether walking, relaxing on the beach, exploring the surf or messing about on the water, there is a special place for everyone to find.

Its unique scenery and quality of light has inspired world-renowned artists and there is a rich artistic heritage of painters, sculptors and potters.  The daily catch of fresh fish and locally grown farm produce inspires culinary genius and a flourishing food scene.

For International Women's Day we are remembering Virginia Woolf, who spent her childhood summers at Talland House in St Ives and was inspired to write her classic novel "To the Lighthouse" by the house and her view across the bay to Godrevy Lighthouse.
A thought provoking, sometime controversial, feminist, living in a time when women had very few rights, she championed the power of the individual. “No need to hurry. No need to sparkle. No need to be anybody but oneself.” She had a clear take on feminism “A feminist is any woman who tells the truth about her life.” She was a feminist role model for countless artists, authors and thinkers and an important part of London's literary and artistic society in the 1920s.
You can wake up to the stunning view of the striking Godrevy Lighthouse when staying at Chy an Carrack. This year, we are delighted to have Polly working at Chy an Carrack, expanding the variety of planting in the garden. Polly is also working at Talland House, helping recreate the period planting from Virginia Woolf's summer stays from clues in her literature.
